China's Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding has started sea trials for the 740-TEU Ningyuan Dian Kun, the country's first 10,000-ton electric containership, reported Melbourne's Baird Maritime.
The ship is undergoing testing off Shanghai before delivery to Ningbo Ocean Shipping. Jiangxi Jiangxin Shipbuilding stated that Ningyuan Dian Kun is the first large all-electric feeder to be built and operated in China.
The vessel measures 127.8 metres in length, 21.6 metres in beam, and 10.5 metres in depth.
Ten containerised batteries with a combined capacity of 19,000 kWh power two permanent magnet motors, enabling speeds of up to 11.5 knots.
