The US torpedo attack on Iranian frigate IRIS Dena raises international law concerns after the ship sank near Sri Lanka, resulting in casualties.

According to the information obtained, the Iranian Navy's Moudge-class frigate IRIS Dena, which was returning to its main base after participating in the MILAN 2026 naval exercise held in India, was attacked off the coast of Galle, Sri Lanka. The incident occurred approximately 2,750 kilometers from the shore, in an area considered international waters, resulting in the ship sinking due to severe damage sustained.

Following the incident, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed in a statement that the ship was struck by a torpedo launched by a U.S. submarine. Hegseth characterized this operation as 'the first instance since World War II of an enemy vessel being sunk by a torpedo.' However, such a military intervention against a warship operating in open waters has raised legitimacy debates concerning international maritime law and the sovereign rights of states. The absence of a legal basis for the attack has heightened concerns regarding global maritime security and stability.

The U.S. also released footage of the attack.

Following the sinking of the ship, the Sri Lankan Navy initiated a large-scale search and rescue operation in accordance with international obligations. According to Sri Lankan officials, at least 80 sailors out of approximately 180 crew members have lost their lives. The 78 sailors who were rescued with injuries are receiving treatment in hospitals in Galle, while search efforts for the missing crew continue. There are concerns about an increase in the death toll.

The maritime community has been shaken by this tragic event in which their colleagues lost their lives. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased sailors and wish a speedy recovery to the injured. The safety of the seas and the supremacy of international law is a shared responsibility of all states.
