A cruise ship collided with two docked vessels in Bremerhaven, causing significant damage and canceling its Canary Islands journey.
According to a statement from the Bremen police on October 26, the accident occurred the previous day around 17:30 off Stromkaje. The cruise ship, which was leaving the port with tugboat assistance, was swept towards two moored container ships due to a sudden gust of wind.
Damage occurred on the port side of the larger of the two container ships, several meters above the waterline, and the container guides were deformed. The lifeboats of the cruise ship, along with their cranes and outer coating, were also damaged. Mein Schiff 3 returned to the terminal after the accident.
According to information provided by TUI Cruises to NDR, there were 2,428 passengers and 922 crew members on board the ship. The journey to the Canary Islands was canceled due to damage requiring shipyard repairs.
The maritime police are investigating the accident. The examination regarding the captain's duty of care does not imply that fault has been established. According to the latest report from Radio Bremen, the initial departure ban imposed on the small container ship has been lifted.
