Minister Yumaklı emphasizes sustainable practices as sardine production is projected to surpass 220,000 tons this year.

According to a statement from the Ministry, Minister Yumaklı participated in inspections in the Kireçburnu area of the Sarıyer district in Istanbul.

Following the inspections, Minister Yumaklı highlighted the importance of sustainability in the fishing and aquaculture sectors of the country.

He noted that they are advancing the fishing and aquaculture sector by balancing conservation and utilization. "The important thing here is the conservation-utilization balance. Starting from the beginning of 2024, with the support of all stakeholders in the sector, we have implemented production planning in aquaculture. Throughout 2024 and into 2025, we have observed that the results of production planning have led to an increase in fish stocks in our seas as well as an increase in the income of our captains and fishermen," Yumaklı stated.

He added, "It is possible to elevate this even further. We will continue to do this in the same way. There are 11 species included in the planning, and two-thirds of our catch, including aquaculture, has almost been included in the production planning, at nearly 98%. Last year, we initiated a quota application for anchovy, which was around 150,000 tons in 2024. This year, we expect the production amount for anchovy to exceed 220,000 tons."

Yumaklı pointed out that the quota application, production planning, and compliance of fishermen with the rules will lead to further advancements in fish stocks, fishing, and aquaculture.

Highlighting that Turkey has achieved significant development in inland waters, coastal areas, and seas over the past 23 years, Yumaklı stated, "Turkey ranks second in Europe and 17th in the world, reaching an export figure of 2 billion dollars. Our fishermen have been fishing not only in our waters but also in international waters. We are making agreements with countries to diversify this and enable them to fish in more countries, and we will continue to do so. From here, I wish all our fishermen, hunters, and aquaculturists fruitful and bountiful catches, with great results. Hopefully, thanks to their collaboration and support with us, we will continue to set new records in the fish stocks of our seas, surrounded by water on three sides, and increase our aquaculture capacity this year by an additional 7,500 tons. May it be fruitful and bountiful."
