Welcoming the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway to Türkiye, Andreas Gaarder, in his office, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay touched upon the importance of developing relations between Izmir and Norwegian cities. Gaarder, on the other hand, emphasized that the common point between Izmir and Norway is the sea and invited President Tugay to Norway.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay hosted the Kingdom of Norway Ambassador to Türkiye Andreas Gaarder in his office. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Secretary General Zeki Yıldırım and Deputy Secretary General Övünç Özgen also took part in the visit. Stating that he has not been to Norway before, President Tugay expressed that he wishes for the relations to improve and that he wants to plan a visit to Norway in the near future. Mayor Tugay stated that Izmir is a special city; He added that studies are being carried out on clean energy, sea cleaning, archeology and similar issues.
Mayor Tugay reminded that Izmir is among the European Mission Cities and also talked about the carbon neutral target until 2030.
“Izmir is a major actor in ship production”
Stating that it is his 4th year in office and that his term of office has come to an end, Gaarder announced that the honorary consulate of Norway will be opened in Izmir. Stating that he liked Izmir very much, especially because of its sea, Gaarder said that more than 50 percent of the vehicles in Norway are electric vehicles and the air quality has improved. Adding that this requires a large infrastructure investment and incentives for the use of electric vehicles, Gaarder talked about the characteristics of Norway and its cities. Noting that relations between Izmir and Norwegian cities should improve, Gaarder reminded that Izmir is a major actor, especially in ship production.
Expressing his congratulations on the honorary consulate, President Tugay noted that the opening of the consulate is important for the development of relations with Norway.
At the end of the visit, Gaarder presented President Tugay with a book about Norway. President Tugay also presented Gaarder with a plaque with Izmir written on it.
