In 2025, 360,000 sq. meters of ghost nets were removed, safeguarding marine ecosystems and protecting 1.2 million aquatic creatures.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has launched a robust initiative to combat ghost nets in seas and inland waters. In 2025, an area of 420 million square meters was surveyed, resulting in the removal of 360,000 square meters of ghost nets and 31,000 pieces of abandoned fishing gear.

Abandoned or lost fishing gear poses a significant threat to marine ecosystems. The ministry emphasized that these efforts have helped preserve the lives of approximately 1.2 million aquatic creatures.

Ghost nets are notorious for trapping fish, marine mammals, and other aquatic life. Their removal is essential for sustainable fishing practices and the conservation of biodiversity.

Officials noted that the scanning and cleaning activities extend beyond the seas, with intensive efforts also taking place in lakes, dams, and other inland waters.

The ministry highlighted that removing ghost nets and illegal fishing gear not only protects fish stocks but also reduces pressure on natural ecosystems, allowing them to regenerate.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry plans to intensify its efforts against ghost nets, continuing to collaborate with fishermen and relevant stakeholders.
