The RSNF's first Tuwaiq Class ship, HMS His Majesty King Saud, was launched in Wisconsin, marking a significant milestone in naval modernization.
The first ship of the Tuwaiq Class, constructed under the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF) new multi-purpose combat vessel project, was launched this week at the Lockheed Martin Marinette Shipyard in Wisconsin, USA.
Named HMS His Majesty King Saud (F820), this vessel is the first of four ships being built for the RSNF under Project Tuwaiq. The keel for the class's third ship, HMS His Majesty King Abdullah, was laid in May 2023 at Marinette.
Project Tuwaiq, conducted in collaboration with Fincantieri, encompasses not only the delivery of ships but also the transfer of knowledge and experience to Saudi shipyards, crew training, simulation systems, logistics and supply chain support, and continuous technical assistance. The modernization of King Abdulaziz Naval Base in Jubail is also included in the project.
The participation of the RSNF Eastern Fleet Commander in the keel-laying ceremonies and the enhancement of the base indicate that four new frigates will be deployed in the Persian Gulf. This signifies a substantial enhancement in capability and tonnage for RSNF elements operating in the region against Iran.
In parallel with Project Tuwaiq, Avante 2200 class corvettes are being delivered under Project Al Sarawat, conducted with Navantia. These vessels are associated with the Western Fleet. The first ship of the class, HMS Al Jubail (F828), along with HMS Hail (F832) and HMS Jazan (F834), has been regularly spotted at King Faisal Naval Base in Jeddah.
These corvettes are expected to replace the Al Madinah Class frigates, which have been worn down in prolonged conflicts with the Houthis in the Red Sea.
The timely delivery of ships under both Project Tuwaiq and Project Al Sarawat without significant delays is regarded as a significant success of effective project management conducted at the shipyards in Marinette and Cádiz, Spain.
