Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory recorded lower July deliveries amid rising competition from Chinese electric vehicle makers, reported the South China Morning Post. Tesla handed over 67,886 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from its Shanghai plant in July, an 8.4 per cent decline year-on-year, according to the China Passenger Car Association. Compared with June, deliveries fell 5.2 per cent.
The downturn followed a brief rebound in June, which ended an eight-month delivery slump. Industry experts suggest Chinese buyers are shifting toward more affordable locally-developed electric cars, as premium models lose appeal.
'Consumers all flocked to cheaper, Chinese-developed electric cars,' said Tian Maowei, a Shanghai sales manager at Yiyou Auto Service, commenting on the growing price-conscious trend among EV buyers.
