Tamer Kıran announces he will not seek a third term as Chairman of the İMEAK Chamber of Shipping, reflecting on his challenging tenure.
Tamer Kıran Announces He Will Not Run for a Third Term
Tamer Kıran, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, evaluated his nearly eight-year tenure during the June Assembly Meeting of the İMEAK Chamber of Shipping (DTO) and announced that he will not run for re-election in the upcoming term.
Kıran stated that the chamber elections are planned to be held in October or at the latest at the beginning of November, and he mentioned that the management period, which began in 2018, has been extremely challenging both for Turkey and the world.
Expressing that they faced many extraordinary developments such as economic crises stemming from exchange rates, the COVID-19 pandemic, global supply chain issues, the Russia-Ukraine war, and conflicts in the Middle East during their terms, Kıran noted that they made intense efforts to resolve the sector's problems during these processes.
“We Worked Without Excluding Anyone”
Emphasizing that the foundation of their management approach is a culture of consultation, Kıran said, “We regarded every member's troubles as our own, and every request as our own responsibility. We promised to be an accessible management when we took office, and we have endeavored to keep that promise.”
Chamber Budget Increased from 97 Million Lira to 1.7 Billion Lira
Kıran announced that the chamber budget, which was approximately 97 million lira when they took office in 2018, has reached 1 billion 700 million lira by 2026. He stated that the approximately 10 million dollars of debt that existed when they took office has also been paid off thanks to financial discipline and a savings mentality.
Noting that the Chamber of Shipping has become one of Turkey's strongest and most reputable chambers in terms of budget size, institutional capacity, and effectiveness, Kıran also mentioned that Piri Reis University has undergone significant financial transformation during the same period.
“Piri Reis University’s 60 Million Dollar Debt Has Been Cleared”
Kıran expressed that all debts of Piri Reis University, which had approximately 60 million dollars in bank and financing debt when they took over, have been paid, and the university has now become a higher education institution that stands on its own financially and has increased its international reputation.
In his speech, Kıran also touched upon the investments made in the chamber branches, stating that service buildings in Aliağa, Bodrum, Kocaeli, and Fethiye have been added to the chamber's inventory. The Antalya Branch has been moved to a new location, and the construction of the new service building for the İskenderun Branch, which was damaged in the earthquake, is ongoing.
“I Will Not Run for a Third Term”
At the end of his speech, Kıran made an important announcement regarding his plans for the upcoming term, stating that he has received strong requests from a wide segment of the sector to run for re-election, but he has decided not to run for a third term.
Kıran said, “What strengthens institutions is not only the work they accomplish. What truly strengthens institutions is the commitment of those who manage them to institutionalism and their ability to leave the position to qualified individuals when the time comes. I have always believed that these positions do not belong to anyone, and what matters is not how long we serve, but what value we add to our institution and our sector. In line with this understanding, I have decided not to run for the Chairmanship of the Board of Directors in the upcoming term.”
