A HONG Kong-flagged container ship belonging to the Taiwanese Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation was involved in a significant accident on March 16 while attempting to dock at the Evyap Port east of Istanbul, Turkey reports Taipei's Taiwan News. Video footage of the incident captured the 368-metre-long vessel, named the YM Witness, approaching the docking area at a steep angle where four large cranes were stationed to unload shipping containers.
As the YM Witness maneuvered to dock its expansive deck collided with one of the cranes, causing three of the four cranes to topple over.
According to the Maritime Executive, at least one individual operating a crane at the time sustained severe injuries, and multiple cargo containers were knocked into the water.
Police and firefighters swiftly responded to the scene to provide assistance and investigate the incident.
The owner of the vessel, Yang Ming Shipping, is expected to bear financial responsibility for the damages caused by the YM Witness.
The vessel operated along the company's MD3 eastbound Mediterranean shipping route. Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation will reach out to businesses potentially affected by delays resulting from the incident, as reported by UDN.
