A fierce storm in Istanbul led to a lighthouse collapse and multiple boats capsizing, prompting Coast Guard recovery efforts and disrupting daily life.
A fierce storm has swept through Istanbul, causing significant damage along the coastline. A 10-meter-high lighthouse in Sarıyer Kireçburnu collapsed into the sea around noon due to strong winds, fortunately without any injuries. The Coast Guard is set to recover the fallen structure.
Waves overtopped the breakwater in Avcılar, flooding the fishing harbor. Just five days prior, a storm had already sunk eight boats in the same area. Fisherman Hasan Taşkıran reported that eight boats were damaged or sunk in the previous storm, and the current situation remains uncertain.
The Negmar car ferry, en route from Topçular to Eskihisar, is currently waiting in a safe area for the storm to pass after being unable to dock due to adverse weather conditions. Passengers on the ferry, stranded for nearly two hours, were informed by the captain that the vessel would depart once the storm subsided.
Several boats anchored along Tuzla's coast capsized due to the severe storm. Some vessels collided with the shore and sustained damage, while others sank. Fishermen struggled to secure their boats against the waves, showing signs of panic as they reinforced their lines to prevent further damage.
Footage captured by bystanders showed seawater occasionally splashing onto the coastal road, with boats rocking in the waves and some narrowly avoiding being swept away. In Fatih Yenikapı, strong southerly winds caused the sea to merge with the land, creating challenging conditions for those trying to photograph the scene.
The powerful winds in Istanbul negatively impacted daily life, with large waves battering the coast. As wave heights increased, the sea appeared to blend with the land, leading to dangerous situations for beachgoers. Winds reached speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, intensifying the waves along the coast and overtopping breakwaters in some areas.
Citizens walking along the shore faced difficulties from the wind and waves, resulting in hazardous conditions. In Fatih Yedikule, ships were seen anchoring and waiting due to the severe winds.
