Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding has laid the keel for a 9,200-TEU ship for Danaos, marking a significant upgrade in its dock capabilities.
Shanhaiguan Shipbuilding has converted a repair dock into a shipbuilding dock and laid the keel for its first 9,200-TEU ship for Danaos, reports China's iMarine.
The keel-laying ceremony took place on March 20 at Dock No 5, a subsidiary of Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. The vessel is the first of five ordered by the Greek Danaos Corporation and is the largest containership ever built by Shanhaiguan.
Danaos placed the order in 2024 for five ships at about US$104 million each, totaling $520 million. Deliveries are scheduled between 2027 and 2028.
The dock's conversion marks its official transformation and upgrade, with a focus on enhancing lifting capacity. Shanhaiguan, founded in 1972 and restructured in 2007, was merged into DSIC in 2016 as part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation.
