Container shipping is experiencing significant changes as carriers implement high-frequency capacity adjustments, according to Sea-Intelligence.

Global container shipping patterns are undergoing significant changes as carriers adopt high-frequency capacity adjustments, as reported by Athens' Safety4Sea.

Sea-Intelligence measured operational capacity churn on the Asia-North America and Asia-Europe trade lanes, revealing that carriers are moving away from stable vessel deployments. Capacity churn reflects the total tonnage entering and exiting a trade lane.

In 2025, the Asia-North Europe trade lane saw churn reach 11 million TEU, significantly above the historical norm of 3-5 million TEU recorded between 2012 and 2019. This figure represents a 138 percent increase compared to 2023, highlighting unprecedented volatility in the market.

Meanwhile, the Asia-North America West Coast churn hit a record 10.4 million TEU in 2025, marking a 32 percent increase from 2024. The Asia-Mediterranean churn reached 6.9 million TEU, an 80 percent rise compared to 2023 and 21 percent higher than 2024.

Churn on the Asia-North America East Coast remained elevated at 6.6 million TEU, although its increase in 2025 was more gradual than in other trade lanes. Sea-Intelligence noted that this data reflects a structural shift in how carriers deploy vessels across global markets.
