Russia's drone strike on Pivdennyi port damages infrastructure, injures three, and highlights increasing threats to Ukraine's export economy.
The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority has announced that Russia has once again attacked Ukraine's Pivdennyi sea port with a drone, causing damage to the port infrastructure. Officials reported that the attack has harmed the railway infrastructure and caused a fire.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksiy Kuleba stated that hangars, a locomotive, and production buildings were damaged in the attack. It was noted that cleaning and repair works continued on Wednesday; however, port activities were still ongoing.
Injuries Reported in the Region
Officials reported that three people were injured in attacks carried out by Russian drones in other parts of the region, with one of the injured being hospitalized.
Attacks on Ports Increasing
It is stated that Russia is increasing its attacks targeting sea ports in order to damage Ukraine's export economy, which is based on agricultural products. According to Ukrainska Pravda, 96 separate attacks on sea ports were reported in 2025, affecting more than 300 facilities.
The Pivdennyi Port is among the centers affected by these attacks. Following a major vegetable oil leak caused by an attack in December, the port had to suspend its operations for several days.
Sea Mine Alarm on Romanian Coasts
On the other hand, as another consequence of the conflicts in the Black Sea, sea mines continue to pose a serious threat to regional countries. This week, Romanian authorities took action following a report of a sea mine washed ashore near Constanța.
The mine, noticed by personnel on duty at the Midia shooting range belonging to the Romanian army, was reported to higher authorities. While local police took security measures at the scene, expert demolition divers from the Romanian Navy's 39th Diving-Engineering Center safely disposed of the explosive.
Significant Risk for Civilians and Commercial Vessels
It is emphasized that sea mines pose a serious danger to commercial vessels and civilians. In August 2025, three swimmers lost their lives in mine explosions near a beach close to Ukraine's Zakota city. The area had previously been closed to swimming for security reasons. Odessa Regional Governor Oleh Kiper stated that being in uncontrolled waters is 'extremely dangerous.'
Regional Cooperation Continues
It has been reported that sea mines have been found along the coasts extending to Georgia in the southeast of the Black Sea, with these mines being detected multiple times in shipping lanes. Turkey, Bulgaria, and Romania are continuing their efforts under a joint maritime cooperation agreement aimed at detecting and disposing of mines that pose a threat to shipping traffic.
