Port of Hamburg docks first of eight 13,380-TEU Cosco newbuildings
THE Port of Hamburg's HHLA's Container Terminal Tollerort has accommodated the first of eight 13,380-TEU Cosco newbuildings that is 366 metres long, 51 metres wide and when fully loaded has a draft of 15.5 metres.
The Cosco Belgium, which was delivered at the end of February and is operating under the Hong Kong flag, is being deployed on the CKYH Alliance's weekly Asia-Europe NE3 service with a ten 13,000-TEU vessels.
From Hamburg, the containership continues her voyage via Antwerp to Shenzhen-Yantian, Hong Kong, Xingang, Dalian, Qingdao, Ningbo and Singapore, returning to Hamburg within 26 days via Rotterdam and Felixstowe.
The vessel is part of an order for eight 13,380 TEU ships from the Chinese NACKS shipyard that Cosco placed in April 2008, and is the largest ship to be built by a Chinese shipyard. By 2014 all the newbuildings will be delivered, a statement from the port authorities said.
It added that China is by a wide margin the Port of Hamburg's leading trade partner for seaborne container traffic. In 2012, 2.6 million TEU were transported between Hamburg and ports in China, including Hong Kong. That represents 30 per cent of total container throughput at Hamburg container terminals.
