Captain Cengiz Sözdemir, a prominent figure in the pilotage community, has made a significant impact on Turkish maritime services for nearly half a century. He officially retired from active professional life on December 12.
Known for his critical roles in both the public and private sectors, Sözdemir excelled as a pilot captain, a demanding and responsible position within the maritime profession. He concluded his career at Anadolu Kılavuzluk A.Ş. (ANKAŞ), where he served until his retirement.
Throughout his career, Sözdemir distinguished himself not only for his expertise in ship maneuvers but also for his visionary contributions to civil society organizations. He played an instrumental role in the development of the profession, serving on the boards of directors and as Vice President of the Turkish Pilots Association (TKKD). Furthermore, he was actively involved in the management of Deniz Kılavuzluk A.Ş. (DEKAŞ), one of the sector's established organizations, contributing to the institutionalization of the Turkish pilotage system.
Beginning his maritime journey as a young officer, Sözdemir navigated every level of the profession, from the turbulent waves of the oceans to the delicate maneuvers in ports.
