The pure automobile and truck carrier named Grande Egypt, built at the China Merchants Heavy Industry Haimen base in Nantong, China, was delivered to the Italian Grimaldi Group on September 24 and went on its maiden voyage.
The ship is the seventh in a series of ten ships the shipyard is building for Grimaldi. The carrying capacity of the PCTC, which has a length of 220 meters, a width of 38 meters and a deck of 15 vehicles, was increased from 9 thousand CEUs in the previous ships of the series to 9 thousand 800 CEUs.
According to Chinese sources, Grande Egypt received the 'ammonia fuel ready' notation from the Italian classification society RINA. This notation does not mean that the ship runs on ammonia today; It expresses the level of design and technical preparation for future fuel conversion.
The ship has a large capacity battery system, solar panels, shore electricity connection and air lubrication system. This equipment, together with the optimized hull and propulsion layout, aims to reduce energy consumption in port operations and navigation.
Nantong Maritime Safety Administration announced that it safely supported the trial run and delivery of 105 high-tech ships and marine structures in the region in the first eight months of 2026. Total trial tonnage increased by 21.2 percent on an annual basis, reaching 3.74 million gross tons. The Grande Egypt delivery shows that Chinese shipyards are advancing together in the race for capacity and alternative fuel readiness in the large PCTC segment.
