An agreement has been reached regarding coal imports during the trade negotiations between China and the United States. According to a Reuters report dated September 28, under the memorandum announced by the White House, China will import 10 million tons of coal annually from the United States in 2027 and 2028. The total purchase amount over the two years will be 20 million tons.
Tariff reductions on coal imports
On September 28, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that coal imports from the United States have been included under mutual tariff reductions. The ministry stated that work will continue within the framework of a Trade Council to facilitate trade between the two countries.
The parties also agreed to establish a working group to discuss mutual market access for agricultural products. Additionally, a separate institutional communication mechanism will be created to address potential investments and investment barriers.
Timeline for tariff reductions not disclosed
According to Reuters, the proposed tariff reductions by the two countries cover a total of $60 billion in goods trade. However, the reduction rates and the start date for implementation have not yet been announced. LNG and oil were not included in the announced product list.
Duration of the commercial agreement extended
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that discussions regarding economic and trade issues between the two countries will continue. The temporary agreement, which was previously valid until November 10, has been extended to January 10, 2027. The parties aim to reach a mutually acceptable agreement by this date.
