Panama Canal Authority postpones Neopanamax lock draft adjustment set for October 2026 due to water level concerns and geopolitical tensions.
On 4 September local time, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) issued an official notice announcing the postponement of the previously scheduled adjustment to the maximum draft restrictions applicable to the Neopanamax locks, which had been set to take effect on 1 October 2026.
Under the revised arrangement, the planned reduction of the maximum permissible draft to 47.5 feet (approximately 14.48 metres) will not proceed as originally scheduled. Until further notice, the maximum allowable draft for the Neopanamax locks will remain at 48.0 feet (approximately 14.63 metres).
The decision reflects an assessment of current water levels in Gatun Lake alongside the most recent meteorological forecasts. The prolonged effects of the El Nino phenomenon have placed sustained pressure on Panama's water resources, prompting the Panamanian government to declare a national state of emergency on 25 August. Simultaneously, escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East - including the threat of a closure of the Strait of Hormuz - have driven a sharp increase in demand for energy shipments routing from the US Gulf to Asian markets, positioning the Panama Canal at renewed risk of operational strain.
The Panama Canal Authority has affirmed its commitment to continued close monitoring of Gatun Lake water levels and will issue timely public notifications regarding any forthcoming adjustments to draft restrictions.
