    Operation to free ice-locked mother ship "Commonwealth" suspended

    The operation to tow the ice-locked mother ship “Commonwealth” in the Okhotsk Sea to clear water has been suspended due to a rupture of the tow rope.

This operation was being carried out by icebreakers "Krasin" and "Admiral Makarov". A mile and a half after the start of the towing the cables broke, their attaching mechanisms were damaged. Today they are undergoing repairs on the "Commonwealth" and "Admiral Makarov". Throughout the night icebreaker "Krasin" was clearing a passageway for the caravan of vessels. Today it shall continue this work. On the eve of the new year a number of vessels found themselves stranded in the ice of the Okhotsk Sea, among them the mother ship "Commonwealth", transport refrigerator "Coast of Hope" and the research vessel "Professor Kiesewetter. The latter two ships have already been conducted to the area of non-hazardous ice.
