NYK's annual vessel safety meeting at its Tokyo headquarters was this year attended by 19 executive officers plus seven ship captains and chief engineers who got together to exchange opinions on ways to safely operate the group's vessels. The Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign is conducted for two months every year from July 1 and draws on the lessons learnt from tanker Diamond Grace's crude oil spill to encourage all staff to bear in mind the importance of safe ship operations.

Chaired by NYK president Tadaaki Naito, who oversees the company's safety and environmental management committee, the meeting gives top management the opportunity to directly exchange views and insights with captains and chief engineers to further develop practical measures to foster safe vessel operations.

Mr Naito said: 'Environmental regulations are being tightened and I would like you to strengthen NYK group's competitiveness by quickly responding to these regulations.'

As part of the safety campaign, Mr Naito visited Grand Vega, a pure car and truck carrier at Yokosuka Shinko pier in Kanagawa prefecture. During the visit the president discussed with the vessel's captain and chief engineer the importance of communication in daily duties and the issues ships face due to the strengthening of regulations.

Looking ahead, the group plans to further advance its safety management systems and position navigational safety as one of its most important tasks.
