The NY-NJ Port Authority and Joby Aviation showcase electric air taxi flights, advancing sustainable aviation and urban transport solutions.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Joby Aviation have conducted the first point-to-point electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft demonstration flights at Port Authority airports, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
Joby's aircraft flew between John F. Kennedy International Airport and several Manhattan heliports, including Downtown Skyport, West 30th, and East 34th Street, before returning to JFK. The flights were supported by TruWeather for operational intelligence and monitored by NUAIR for live tracking to ensure safe integration into complex airspace.
The demonstration builds on the Port Authority's net-zero carbon agenda and follows its 2025 partnership with BETA Technologies on the first all-electric passenger aircraft flight to land at a Port Authority airport. Earlier this year, the agency was selected for the Federal Aviation Administration's electric aircraft integration pilot program.
Port Authority Chairman Mr. Kevin O'Toole stated that the agency has a responsibility to test next-generation aviation technology for the public good. Executive Director Ms. Kathryn Garcia added that the demonstration was part of a broader effort to prepare the region for future aviation.
Joby Chief Executive JoeBen Bevirt expressed that the company aims to deliver quiet, zero-emission air taxi services for New Yorkers. The Port Authority is also seeking private partners to design and operate a vertiport at LaGuardia Airport.
Joby, based in California, is in the final stages of FAA type certification after more than 50,000 miles of flight testing. Its aircraft is designed to produce a lower noise footprint than helicopters, blending into urban environments. The New York flights form part of Joby's 2026 national demonstration tour.
