Norway's F-15 Shuttle ferry by Hyke successfully carried 41,000 passengers, showcasing low energy use and high satisfaction in urban transport.
The electric F-15 Shuttle ferry, developed by the Norwegian maritime technology company Hyke, has achieved significant success in Norway's public transportation system. According to a new report published by the Fredrikstad Municipality, during the 14-month pilot implementation period, the ferry stood out with its low energy consumption and high passenger satisfaction.
Over 41,000 Passengers Transported
The fully electric ferry, which has a capacity of 50 passengers, operated on the Bekkhus–Vaterland line within the Fredrikstad public transportation system from April 2024 to July 2025. Completing the approximately 225-meter river crossing in an average of two minutes, the ferry transported more than 41,000 passengers during daily operations.
Eight Times More Efficient Compared to Diesel Ferries
According to the report, the Hyke F-15 Shuttle achieved up to 88% lower energy consumption compared to similar diesel ferries. Consuming only 10 kWh of energy per hour, the vessel uses energy equivalent to about five household hair dryers.
High Passenger Satisfaction
It was noted that there were no safety incidents related to the vessel during the pilot project, and the passenger satisfaction rate was reported as 4.72 out of 5.00. User loyalty was also recorded at 100%.
A New Alternative in Urban Transportation
Hyke CEO Halvor Vislie stated that urban waterways could be utilized more effectively, expressing that electric ferries offer a fast and economical solution instead of high-cost investments like bridges and tunnels.
Support from European Programs
The pilot project was carried out as part of Fredrikstad Municipality's sustainable transportation strategy and was also supported by the Urban Growth Agreement and the Horizon Europe Seamless Urban Mobility program.
