NORTH P&I Club's Tony Baker is to step down at the end of this month as the director of the loss prevention department after 14 years at the helm

NORTH P&I Club's Tony Baker is to step down at the end of this month as the director of the loss prevention department after 14 years at the helm. Following 18 years at sea and other roles in the industry, including working as a lecturer in maritime studies at South Tyneside College, Mr Baker joined the department in 1999. Since running the department in 2004, he has expanded the range of activities carried out by the team to include targeted loss prevention support and more direct assistance to its members worldwide.

Today the loss prevention department comprises 15 mariners and executives, making it one of the largest loss prevention teams within the International Group of P&I Clubs.

As well as building the strong reputation of the loss prevention service, Mr Baker has also represented North at the International Group of P&I Clubs, including the P&I Qualification Sub-Committee and the Ships Technical Committee, which he chaired for six years.

Mr Baker said: 'It has been a privilege to work for North and I am especially proud of the dedicated and talented loss prevention team and the way it continually develops and expands its range of innovative products and services to support North's members.'

He will return to the business in August on a part-time basis working on a range of loss prevention projects.

Taking over the role as head of loss prevention on July 1 is deputy director Colin Gillespie, who joined the company in 2006 and has been involved in all aspects of the Club's loss prevention services.

Mr Gillespie will be supported by Alvin Forster and Simon MacLeod who are both being promoted to the roles of deputy director, and a dedicated team of mariners and executives in Newcastle and Singapore.
