'NINOVA' Ship Stranded in Karasu Rescued, Transferred to Aliağa
SAKARYA - The general cargo ship named 'NINOVA,' flying the flag of Cameroon, ran aground off the coast of Karasu in Sakarya on May 1, 2026. After approximately two and a half months of efforts, the vessel has been successfully rescued.
According to a statement made via the social media account of the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, one of the most critical phases of the salvage operation, the cargo discharge activities, began on July 7. Following the complete unloading of the ship's cargo, the operation conducted on July 11, 2026, safely floated the vessel and removed it from the area where it had run aground, relocating it to a safe distance from the shore.
After the salvage operation, comprehensive technical inspections were carried out on the ship. Damage assessment work was completed through hull inspections conducted by diving teams, and necessary repair and reinforcement operations were also performed.
Following these activities, a Backup Navigation Report was prepared, granting approval for the safe transportation of the vessel by sea. According to the General Directorate of Maritime Affairs, the 'NINOVA' ship was transferred to Aliağa on July 16, 2026.
Officials stated that throughout the operation, all processes were conducted in coordination with relevant institutions to ensure that the ship did not harm the environment and that maritime safety was maintained.
Operation Lasted Approximately 2.5 Months
After the grounding incident on May 1, technical examinations were conducted in the area, and a multi-phase salvage plan was implemented, taking into account the ship's structure, seabed conditions, and weather conditions. The ship, which was lightened by cargo discharge, was controlled and floated back to safety, and after all necessary inspections were completed, it was sent to Aliağa for maintenance and repair work.
The General Directorate of Maritime Affairs expressed gratitude to all institutions and teams involved in successfully completing the operation, stating that the process was carried out with a priority on maritime safety and environmental security.
