The high-speed passenger ferry named 'Filo Jet', operating between the port of Girne and the Taşucu Port in Mersin, capsized shortly after departing from Girne on August 30th in the afternoon and subsequently sank.
There were 267 people on board, including 259 passengers and eight crew members. Of those, 241 individuals were rescued, eight people died, and 18 others are missing.
The captain, M.Ö., along with crew members M.S, M.G, S.E, V.H, R.İ, Z.Ö, K.K., and company employee A.Ö. were brought before the Girne Criminal Court.
The captain's name is Mustafa Öz. He is 66 years old and obtained his captain's license from Honduras, which was issued two years ago.
Initially, the front part of the ship broke off.
The ship's captain and crew stated in court that the vessel capsized due to the front part breaking off as a result of the waves. The captain argued that there were no issues at departure according to meteorological data and that the ship had the necessary certifications for both navigation and administrative aspects.
The court requested the collection of technical data, the hearing of witnesses, an inquiry into whether an investigation had been initiated in Turkey regarding this matter, and the completion of other documents.
