Kpler sees millions of new users as the Iran war escalates, with governments and businesses tracking maritime activity, reports Financial Times.

Analytics firm Kpler has gained millions of new users since the outbreak of the Iran war, as governments, businesses, and media track ships and energy flows, reports London's Financial Times.

Kpler became a leading provider of shipping and trade data after acquiring MarineTraffic and FleetMon in 2021 and Spire in 2025. Its MarineTraffic platform allows real-time monitoring of shipping movements in the Strait of Hormuz, where thousands of vessels have been stranded.

MarineTraffic user numbers rose to 8.5 million in April from 3.5 million a year earlier, while paying subscribers increased by 11,000. Users of Kpler's commodities platform grew by 28 percent this year. A minority stake sale has valued the company at US$3-5 billion.

Co-founder Francois Cazor said the platform had an 'inundation of requests' after US-Israeli strikes on Iran began in February. He rejected claims of monopolistic dominance, noting competition from S&P Global, and stressed the importance of accuracy given the company's business clients.

Kpler draws data from AIS, satellites, and more than 500 ground sources, including port operators. It has received queries from Opec members and occasionally withholds ship locations for security reasons. The Brussels-headquartered firm expects US$300-400 million in annual recurring revenues this year and remains profitable.

Mr. Cazor said the company could pursue a stock market listing in the future but intends to keep founder and management control. He added that Kpler aims to expand into insurance and become a household name, saying: 'You can Kpler that.'
