Mexico is aiming for a preliminary agreement with the United States on steel, aluminium, and automobiles ahead of the formal review of the US-Mexico-Canada trade pact, reports Reuters.
President Claudia Sheinbaum stated at a press conference that Mexico hopes to secure an early deal as US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer visits for talks. She emphasized the importance of the three sectors to Mexico's economy.
Mexico is a major exporter of vehicles, auto parts, and machinery, most of which are sent to the US. The country has so far avoided heavy tariffs thanks to protections under the USMCA.
Washington has signalled it will push for tighter rules of origin to prevent goods, particularly from China, from entering the US tariff-free via Mexico.
The talks are seen as critical for Mexico as it seeks to safeguard its export base and maintain access to the US market.
