The Maritime Interest Index reveals a decline in public interest in the maritime sector, despite recent spikes due to geopolitical events.

Interest in the maritime sector declines from its peak.

Crisis communication consultant Dustin Eno announced that the Maritime Interest Index (MAI) data indicates a decline in public interest in the maritime sector compared to peak levels during the initial phases of the war process between the U.S.-Israel and Iran.

The announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on March 3 that the U.S. armed forces would 'redirect' ships through the Strait of Hormuz as part of the 'Freedom Project' operation temporarily increased global media interest in the maritime sector. However, this increase fell short of the strong jumps seen in previous developments and had a limited reflection in the MAI data.

The Maritime Interest Index stands out as a daily composite indicator that measures the sector's real visibility in the public eye by analyzing Google search volumes, Wikipedia views, social media interactions, and mainstream media content.

According to the data, the MAI has maintained a remarkable continuity since November 6, 2025, remaining above the historical average. The index, which stayed at high levels for approximately 180 days, is just behind the record set during the Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. However, in the current process, the average value has reached 131, surpassing the intensity of past crisis periods.

In contrast, a downward trend has been observed following the peak of the index on March 12. After Iran seized ships in April, the MAI briefly rose to 260, but the overall trend has declined from 353 to approximately 140.

Meanwhile, the stranding of around 1,000 ships and 20,000 sailors in the Gulf continues to have significant impacts on global trade and the economy. Experts indicate that while public interest remains above the historical average, it has entered a downward trend.

Dustin Eno pointed out that the maritime sector has not been adequately understood for many years, emphasizing that communication needs to be strengthened for the increased visibility over the past six months to create a lasting impact. Eno called on sector representatives to 'convey their messages to the public clearly and repeatedly.'

Experts highlight that public interest is limited and temporary, stressing that the current interest opportunity should be evaluated through strategic communication.
