The Qatari Ministry of Transport has announced that all ships and maritime vessels will be able to fully resume navigation starting from Sunday, July 26. This decision expands the previously implemented partial reopening within geographical boundaries to encompass all types of vessels.
The Qatari Ministry of Transport stated that maritime navigation activities will fully restart for all types of ships and maritime vessels as of July 26. The ministry has requested boat and ship users to comply with the existing maritime regulations and to check the necessary safety and security equipment before setting sail.
On July 21, Qatar had announced a limited reopening in some coastal areas, restricted to an area of approximately seven nautical miles. The latest decision indicates a transition from measures limited to specific areas and vessel categories to full maritime traffic.
However, this decision does not imply that military risks in the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea have been eliminated. The reopening of navigation in Qatari territorial waters allows vessels to safely transit through international routes that carry regional war risks, which are separate issues.
When making decisions regarding voyages, shipowners will continue to evaluate flag state warnings, war risk insurance, war clauses in charter agreements, crew safety, and the status of the destination port together. The fact that the port appears open on the map does not mean that the insurer shares the same optimism.
