Maersk's largest containerships transit Suez Canal, enhancing service efficiency in the Red Sea corridor as recovery efforts progress.
Two of Maersk's largest containerships transited the Suez Canal together on Saturday, Aug 22, marking a milestone in the carrier's push to restore services along the Suez Canal–Red Sea corridor and improve schedule efficiency.
The Suez Canal Authority highlighted the transits as part of its wider effort to rebuild traffic through the waterway. The authority honored the 'Bangkok Maersk' with a plaque ceremony marking the vessel's first passage through the canal.
The 'Bangkok Maersk', built in 2015, has a deadweight tonnage of 181,648 and a capacity of 17,480 twenty-foot equivalent units. The ship belongs to Maersk's dual-fuel class and can operate on methanol. She was sailing from Italy to Singapore.
The Saturday transit follows a decision announced roughly two weeks earlier by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, partners in the Gemini Cooperation, to shift more routes back to the Suez and Red Sea corridor. Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc stated that conditions supported the return of additional vessels to their normal routes, though the company would continue to monitor the situation. Analysts have suggested that Maersk could restore all of its services to the Suez–Red Sea corridor by the end of the year.
The Suez Canal Authority pointed to the operational advantages of returning ships to the corridor. For the Maersk vessels, it noted that the route would cut transit times by up to 14 days compared with sailing around the southern tip of Africa.
