Dr. Murat Orhan emphasizes the importance of field-tested leadership in maritime at the International Economy Summit, highlighting strategy and mindset.

Dr. Murat Orhan, General Manager of İDO, made significant evaluations regarding leadership, operational excellence, and organizational transformation during the "Leadership for the Future" panel he attended at the International Economy Summit held over the weekend. Emphasizing the nature of leadership in a sector like maritime, where the tolerance for error is extremely low, Orhan highlighted that the core of today's leadership lies in the ability to connect strategy with the field.

Dr. Orhan stated that the distinguishing factor in leadership is not solely the creation of the right strategy, saying, "Strategy alone is not enough. If there is no counterpart in the field, even the best strategy remains just a presentation. The real difference is made by leadership that lives, measures, and can instantly revise the strategy in the field when necessary."

Expressing that decisions in the maritime sector are often made in real-time, Orhan noted that variable weather conditions, port operations, and demand fluctuations directly affect leadership reflexes. In this context, he mentioned that he addresses leadership in three fundamental layers, defining these layers as "people, data, and operational intuition." He emphasized that the human factor forms the basis of sustainable success and stated that involving field teams in the process is critical. He pointed out that data analytics has become indispensable in decision-making processes, stating, "Data tells you what is happening; to understand why, you need to know the field." He added that operational intuition is particularly decisive in moments requiring quick decisions.

TRANSFORMATION IS NOT SUSTAINABLE WITHOUT A CHANGE IN MINDSET

Touching upon the management model implemented at İDO, Orhan said, "We adopt a data-driven management model calibrated with field reality at İDO. We design the strategy at the center and continuously update it with feedback from the field." He noted that they have transformed the organizational structure into a model that is more agile and capable of making quick decisions, expressing that modern leadership requires more "orchestration" than control.

Regarding organizational transformation, Orhan emphasized that change in rooted structures is more a matter of leadership than a technical process. He stated that the starting point for lasting transformation is not systems or people, but perspective, saying, "Transformations made without changing the mindset are not sustainable. When the perspective changes, both people and systems adapt to this new orientation."

While initiating the transformation process at İDO, Orhan expressed that the fundamental question the organization asked itself was decisive: "Are we a line operator, or are we a mobility ecosystem?" He stated that this question reshaped all decision-making mechanisms.

    CONSISTENCY IN LEADERSHIP IS ESSENTIAL

Emphasizing that three fundamental elements are critical for the sustainability of transformation, Orhan listed them as cultural alignment, systemic support, and leadership consistency. He stated, "Organizations look at what the leader tolerates more than what they say. If you tolerate old habits, the transformation will not be permanent."

Recalling that elements such as safety, operations, and timing require clarity in the maritime sector, Orhan noted that transformation processes should be advanced in a controlled yet determined manner. He expressed that in organizations where transparency and trust are built, not only employees but all stakeholders will have the courage to make significant contributions to the ecosystem, while also highlighting the critical importance of involving field workers in decision-making processes for success.

Dr. Murat Orhan concluded his speech with the following words: "Leadership is no longer a plan written at a desk; it is a process tested in the field, validated by data, and brought to life by people. Lasting transformation begins in the mind, turns into behavior, and eventually settles into the corporate culture."
