ITÜ Faculty of Maritime Studies Academics Secure €1.18 Million EU Project: Autonomous Marine Vehicles to be Developed
The project, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Emre Akyüz, aims for the development of autonomous ships and digital transformation in the maritime sector.
The European Union HORIZON project titled 'FAcilitate the development of unmanned Vehicles in the maritime sector (FAVOR),' led by Prof. Dr. Emre Akyüz from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Maritime Studies, has been granted funding. The project, which has a total budget of €1.18 million, will be carried out over a period of 48 months.
The project will be implemented under the leadership of Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU, UK), in collaboration with nine different universities.
A Broad Academic Team Will Participate
Many academics from ITU Faculty of Maritime Studies and the Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering will be involved in the project. The research team includes Prof. Dr. Selma Ergin, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ergin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Demirel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Veysi Başhan, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yunus Emre Şenol, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pelin Bolat.
Autonomous Ships and Digital Transformation Are Targeted
Within the scope of the FAVOR project, which focuses on autonomous ships and digital transformation in the maritime sector, studies will be conducted for the development of autonomous marine vehicles (Maritime Unmanned Vehicles – MUV).
The project aims to develop solutions in various areas such as regulatory infrastructure, risk assessment, training and education processes, sustainability, labor market, and human factors.
It is expected that FAVOR will contribute to the widespread adoption of next-generation technologies in maritime and support the creation of the qualified human resources needed in the sector.
