Iran confirms the death of Ayatollah Khamenei, marking the start of a 40-day mourning period amid rising regional tensions.
Iran's state television confirmed the death of the country's religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The television presenter, in tears, announced Khamenei's death and declared that the country has entered a 40-day mourning period.
In a statement attributed to the Supreme National Security Council, no information was provided regarding how Khamenei died or who might succeed him.
Official media reported that Khamenei's daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren were also killed in the attack. The Fars News Agency, linked to the Revolutionary Guards, reported that one of Khamenei's daughters-in-law was among the deceased. The statement also emphasized that Khamenei's 'martyrdom will be the beginning of an uprising against the oppressors.' The Iranian Revolutionary Guards warned of a 'devastating attack' on U.S. bases in the region and Israel.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump had announced that Iran's religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in attacks they conducted in cooperation with Israel.
In a written statement from his Truth Social platform, Trump said, 'One of the most evil people in history, Khamenei, is dead.'
Trump added, 'He could not escape our intelligence and highly advanced tracking systems, and because we worked in close cooperation with Israel, neither he nor the other leaders killed with him could do anything.'
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also stated in a press conference on Saturday evening that there were increasing signs of Khamenei's death.
