The IMO's 2026 regulations enhance maritime safety, protect the environment, and improve seafarers' working conditions, effective January 1, 2026.
A series of mandatory regulations adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) officially came into effect on January 1, 2026. These new rules significantly impact navigational safety, environmental protection, and the working conditions of seafarers in global maritime transportation.
One key regulation mandates the reporting of containers that fall overboard, aiming to enhance safety in maritime traffic and reduce environmental risks.
Among the 2026 regulations is the SASH regulation, designed to protect seafarers from bullying and harassment. Implemented under the STCW Code, this regulation includes training for crew members and establishes standards to be adhered to on ships, fostering a safer and more respectful working environment at sea.
Additionally, fuel safety regulations have been tightened. Increased inspections of Bunker Delivery Notes (BDN) and stricter flashpoint requirements for fuels aim to reduce fire hazards and operational risks.
IMO officials emphasize that these new regulations will elevate standards in the maritime sector and contribute to sustainable maritime transportation.
