Contecon Manzanillo has surpassed 12 million TEU since 2013, driven by strategic location and customer trust, reports Port Technology International.
Contecon Manzanillo, International Container Terminal Services Inc's (ICTSI) unit at Mexico's Port of Manzanillo, has surpassed 12 million TEU handled since opening in 2013, reports London's Port Technology International.
The terminal credited this achievement to customer trust, shipping line support, and its strategic location. It has consistently posted the highest throughput at Manzanillo.
In 2025, Contecon Manzanillo recorded import growth of 10.5 percent and export growth of 12.5 percent, despite flat volumes across Mexico's Pacific coast ports.
Since 2023, the terminal has invested more than US$300 million in Phase 3A and 3B expansion, part of a $900 million program to boost yard and berth capacity and add specialized equipment.
The facility now operates 1.3 kilometers of berths and new quay cranes with 60-meter outreach, alongside hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes. These upgrades allow servicing of vessels up to 400 meters long and 24,000 TEU capacity.
Hybrid equipment has cut fuel consumption by about 50 percent. The terminal has maintained Carbon Neutral Certification under ISO 14064 since 2022, supported by emissions audits and offsetting measures.
CEO Jose Antonio Contreras stated that trade with Asia, particularly China, has driven growth, with imports rising more than 70 percent in four years. He added that this milestone positions the terminal to exceed two million TEU annually.
ICTSI last month also confirmed plans to advance the South Luzon Container Terminal in Bauan, Batangas, with commercial operations targeted for 2028.
