HMM has placed a significant order for 10 feeder vessels at HD Hyundai, valued at approximately US$557 million, with deliveries by December 2028.
South Korean liner operator HMM has been linked to a major order for 10 feeder container vessels at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, reports London's Riviera Maritime Media.
HD Hyundai announced on 16 March that it had secured a contract worth about US$557 million with an undisclosed Asian shipping company. Market sources have identified HMM as the buyer, with deliveries scheduled through December 2028.
The pricing indicates that the ships are conventionally fueled 2,800-TEU vessels. In late 2025, HMM contracted HD Hyundai and Hanwha Ocean to build twelve 13,000-TEU ships and also ordered 12 small vessels from China's Huanghai Shipbuilding.
As of the end of 2025, HMM ranked eighth among global liner operators, holding a three percent market share and a fleet of 94 container vessels totaling 990,000 TEU. The company also operates bulk carriers, tankers, car carriers, and LPG ships.
With this latest deal, HD Hyundai has secured orders for 43 vessels worth about US$5.3 billion so far in 2026, which accounts for nearly 23 percent of its annual target. BIMCO reported that the global container vessel order book has reached 1,350 ships with a combined capacity of 11.8 million TEU, with smaller vessel segments expanding the fastest.
