HHLA revises 2026 profit outlook to EUR115-135 million due to strikes and automation impacting container throughput.

Hamburg port operator expects operating profit of EUR115-135 million as strike disruptions and terminal automation weigh on container throughput.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has lowered its 2026 earnings forecast for the second time in three months. The company now expects an operating profit of EUR115-135 million. It cited strike-related disruptions at its Hamburg container terminals and the continued rollout of automation across its terminal operations.

The revision reflects the company's business performance to date and updated fourth-quarter estimates. It marks a further adjustment to an outlook that HHLA had already trimmed earlier in the year.

Industrial action has disrupted terminal operations in Hamburg and reduced handling volumes at the company's container facilities. HHLA operates three container terminals in the port: Altenwerder, Burchardkai, and Tollerort. Together, they form the backbone of its Elbe port operations.

The ongoing automation program is adding to the strain. Technology upgrades at an active terminal require equipment changeovers, process adjustments, and staff retraining while vessels continue to call. These factors can temporarily reduce productivity before the long-term gains in capacity and efficiency take effect.

The combined impact has led HHLA to revise its container throughput expectations for the year. The company now forecasts a significant decline in container throughput in 2026. Its previous guidance called for only a slight decrease.

Container throughput measures the volume of boxes handled at HHLA's terminals and serves as a core indicator for its Port Logistics segment. Weaker-than-expected volumes in Hamburg contributed directly to the lower earnings outlook.

The earnings downgrade does not extend to the rest of HHLA's guidance. The company left its revenue and container transport forecasts unchanged, and it still expects revenue to increase in 2026.

Container transport covers the group's hinterland logistics activities, which move containers by rail and road between seaports and inland destinations. Much of this business runs through its intermodal subsidiary, Metrans, which operates rail connections linking North Sea and Adriatic ports with markets across Central and Eastern Europe. Because the transport forecast holds steady while terminal volumes fall, the weakness appears concentrated in Hamburg's quay operations rather than across the group's wider logistics network.

The second forecast cut in three months points to operational pressure on Hamburg's container terminals amid labor disruption and technological transition. Even so, HHLA's steady revenue and transport guidance show that its intermodal and logistics operations continue to support group performance. The coming quarters will test whether the automation investment can restore throughput and strengthen Hamburg's position among Europe's leading container ports.
