Hapag-Lloyd acquires a 25% stake in Maersk's Maasvlakte II Terminal, enhancing its terminal portfolio and operational capabilities.
Hapag-Lloyd has formally signed an agreement with Maersk's terminal subsidiary, APM Terminals, to acquire a 25% stake in the Maasvlakte II Terminal at the Port of Rotterdam.
The two parties will form a strategic partnership to jointly support the terminal's continued upgrades, capacity expansion, and operational performance improvements. This investment further cements Maasvlakte II Terminal's pivotal role within the 'Twin Star' network.
Maasvlakte II Terminal is a fully automated facility that entered operations in 2015 and is currently undergoing a major expansion programme. The expansion encompasses the addition of 1,000 metres of deep-water quay, doubling the total deep-water berth length to 2,000 metres, a substantial increase in yard capacity, the introduction of four on-dock rail tracks, and the full-scale deployment of automated guided vehicles and related automated equipment. Upon completion, the terminal's annual throughput capacity is projected to reach 5.4 million TEU.
Through this transaction, Hapag-Lloyd's terminal subsidiary, Hanseatic Global Terminals, will further extend its global terminal asset portfolio and secure capacity at an automated facility. Following the close of the deal, APM Terminals will retain operational control of the terminal.
Dheeraj Bhatia, Chief Technology and Information Officer of Hapag-Lloyd and Chief Executive Officer of Hanseatic Global Terminals, stated that Maasvlakte II Terminal represents a cornerstone of the 'Twin Star' collaborative network and is closely aligned with Hapag-Lloyd's strategic ambition to build a stronger portfolio of terminal assets across its core global markets.
Both parties have agreed to keep the specific financial terms of the transaction confidential. Final completion of the deal remains subject to approval from the relevant authorities and regulatory bodies.
