Evergreen Marine confirms $3B order for 11 megamax ships, enhancing its fleet with dual-fuel technology amid a competitive market.
Evergreen Marine has confirmed an order for eleven 24,000 TEU containerships worth US$3 billion, as reported by London's Lloyd's List. The contract is split between shipyards in China and South Korea.
Hanwha Ocean of South Korea will build six megamax vessels, marking its first collaboration with Evergreen. Guangzhou Shipyard International of China will construct the remaining five ships, which will be equipped with methanol and diesel dual-fuel systems.
Evergreen, the world's seventh-largest liner with a 5.7 percent market share, currently operates 12 ultra-large container vessels. The company has 59 ships totaling 820,000 TEU on order, representing the largest pipeline among major carriers.
Despite oversupply concerns and weaker freight rates, global carriers have ordered nearly 9 million TEU of new capacity, which is equal to 30 percent of the existing fleet, according to Lloyd's List.
