China is importing its first shipment of Argentine wheat since the 1990s, reports Bloomberg News, as Buenos Aires moves to boost exports by trimming tariffs.
The cargo is being loaded at a facility on the Parana River, Argentina's main export hub. The vessel will then take on an additional 65,000 tonnes of wheat at an Atlantic port before sailing for China.
The deal reflects a broader trend of China sourcing more crops from South America amid a prolonged trade dispute with the US. Beijing last year authorised imports of Argentine wheat and corn, signalling its intent to diversify food supplies.
Argentinian President Javier Milei has sought to encourage shipments by cutting tariffs, a move aimed at strengthening the country's export base.
