A fire on the bulk carrier Nord Houston at Newport Docks was contained without injuries, with cargo discharge plans underway.

A fire involving scrap metal broke out on a bulk carrier docked at the Newport Docks port complex in Wales, prompting a response from numerous teams. Fortunately, there were no casualties or injuries reported.

According to a statement from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the fire started early Sunday morning on the bulk carrier named Nord Houston, which was located at the recycling terminal in Newport Port. Five fire engines, two ladder vehicles, specialized response teams, and a significant number of personnel were dispatched to the area. Firefighting boats also provided support from the sea.

The fire was brought under control thanks to the intensive efforts of the teams, and it was extinguished on the same day. Monitoring activities continued throughout the night to mitigate the risk of re-ignition.

Authorities reported that there was no danger to nearby businesses and residential areas, and they confirmed that there were no injuries in the incident.

In a statement made by the port operator ABP, it was noted that the ship owner and the terminal operator had reached an agreement regarding the discharge of the cargo affected by the fire. It was recorded that fire crews would be present on-site during the discharge operation to oversee the process.

Experts indicate that scrap metal cargoes pose significant risks in maritime transport due to the pollutants they contain. In particular, lithium-ion batteries can cause fires by generating high heat when damaged.

Additionally, the oxidation process occurring in steel scrap can lead to an increase in temperature. It is noted that shavings and fine metal pieces can spontaneously ignite at high temperatures.
