A fire in the engine room of the bulk carrier Mandy led to two crew fatalities and one hospitalization during its journey to Yantai Port.
A fire in the engine room of the bulk carrier named Mandy, flying the Singapore flag, resulted in the death of two crew members, while one person was airlifted to the hospital.
The 2010-built vessel had been en route from Singapore to Yantai Port in China since February 8. The fire broke out shortly before the ship's arrival on February 17 at 19:35 Singapore time.
All 25 crew members were citizens of Myanmar. The crew managed to bring the fire under control, but two sailors lost their lives. Following the report, Chinese authorities dispatched rescue vessels and a helicopter to the area, and assistance was also requested from nearby commercial ships.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) announced that a third crew member was evacuated to a shore-based medical facility for further treatment. No environmental pollution was detected as a result of the incident.
The vessel, with a deadweight tonnage of 180,371 dwt, is managed by Pacific Rim Shipmanagement. The company is preparing for the ship's tow to Yantai Port.
An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the MPA in coordination with Chinese authorities. The agency also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased sailors and promised support.
