Four containers were spotted drifting in Burgas Bay, possibly linked to the sunken Contship Jet, raising concerns over hazardous materials.
According to navigation announcement number 779 published in the VTMIS system of the Bulgarian State Port Infrastructure Operator, four containers were observed on November 1 at 08:55 UTC. The warning covers the maritime area east of Burgas Bay.
In two separate announcements published on the same day, another container observation and a drifting vessel were also reported. Records do not confirm that all container observations belong to different objects; therefore, the total number of containers has not been finalized.
Bulgarian maritime publication Maritime.bg and public broadcaster BNR reported that the containers may have come from the Contship Jet. The vessel was attacked off the coast of Bulgaria on October 28 and was subsequently declared sunk. However, the connection between the newly found containers and the ship has not yet been officially confirmed.
In a previous announcement regarding the cargo of the Contship Jet, authorities mentioned that it included hazardous materials. The contents of the containers observed off Burgas have not been disclosed. The new observations do not indicate the presence of a chemical leak or marine pollution on their own.
