Malaysia's Coast Guard Ship Launched in Kocaeli

The 99-meter MPMS-1, constructed by Atlas Shipyard under DESAN for the Malaysian Coast Guard, has been launched into the sea. The ship is expected to be delivered in January 2027.

The Multi-Purpose Coast Guard Vessel MPMS-1, built for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) by Atlas Shipyard, was launched on October 2, 2026, in a ceremony.

The ceremony, held at the ATLAS Shipyard in the Kocaeli Free Zone, was attended by Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, Malaysian Interior Minister Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail, Chairman of the Board of DESAN Shipyard Cenk İsmail Kaptanoğlu, and officials from both countries. MPMS-1 is the first of two 99-meter vessels being constructed for the Malaysian Coast Guard.

Delivery Target Set for January 2027

In his speech at the ceremony, Cenk İsmail Kaptanoğlu announced that they aim to deliver the ship in 22 months, two months earlier than the 24-month delivery period stipulated in the contract.

Following the launch phase, outfitting, system integration, and testing activities will continue on the vessel. With the completion of these processes, MPMS-1 is planned to be delivered to Malaysia in January 2027. Kaptanoğlu also stated that they aim to deliver the second vessel in less than 22 months.

Capable of Operating at Sea for 30 Days

According to the technical information shared at the ceremony, MPMS-1 has a width of 17 meters and a displacement of approximately 3,300 tons. The design anticipates a speed of 20 knots and a duration of 30 days at sea. The ship can accommodate a crew of 70, as well as an additional 30 personnel.

The armament is expected to include one 30-millimeter main gun and two 12.7-millimeter weapon systems. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi noted that systems developed by ASELSAN and HAVELSAN will also be utilized on the vessel.

To Be Used in Search and Rescue and Maritime Security

MPMS-1 is designed for maritime surveillance, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, and disaster response missions. In a statement by the Malaysian Coast Guard, it was reported that approximately 85% of the first vessel's construction has been completed, while the progress rate for the second vessel stands at 34.05%.

The ship is planned to be taken to Malaysia in early 2027 and showcased at the LIMA 2027 International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition.
