Danish authorities have detained the Iranian-flagged container ship 'Nora' due to unverified registration documents during port state control.
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) — Danish maritime authorities announced that they have detained an Iranian-flagged container ship anchored in Northern European waters under port state control due to the inability to verify its registration and certification documents.
In a statement from the Danish Maritime Authority, it was indicated that the decision to detain the container ship named 'Nora,' which flies the Iranian flag, was made because the validity of its registration and certification status has not yet been proven. The authority announced that the ship would not be released until it is declared to be properly registered.
Information regarding the ship's registration history shows that it was previously recorded by the international maritime data provider LSEG as having sailed under the Comoros flag. However, the Comoros authorities informed Denmark that the ship is not listed in their records. Following this development, it was noted that the ship is now flying the Iranian flag.
Danish authorities stated that the ship will be examined under port state control, and its release will be possible only after the documentation status is officially verified. It was reported that the inspection would take place at a time when sea and weather conditions are suitable.
Such registration and certification requests, identified by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) number, are indicators that a ship is registered with its flag state and complies with international maritime regulations. Denmark's decision was made amid suspicions that these requirements were not being met.
