The “YM Efficiency” that lost 83 containers 30 kilometres off the coast near Port Stephens in rough seas, causing debris to wash up across the New South Wales mid-north coast will be brought in to dock at Sydney's Port Botany on June 5. Ongoing poor weather meant it had been unsafe for the ship to dock over the weekend. After the weather eased, the vessel has turned around and was heading slowly back up so that it willl be in a position to take the pilot off Port Botany. The ship was currently off the coast near Gerroa in the Illawarra and was to be berthed under slow and careful assessment during daylight hours. The port captain anticipated that the ship will be there for a number of days while the operation to recover the boxes that were damaged and onboard got underway and completed. The contents of the lost containers included car parts, nappies, sanitary products which were washing up around the Nelson Bay area over the past few days. The Roads and Maritime Services were in charge of the salvaging the flotsam such as plastic bags, bottles, potato chip packets, jars of emu oil and beauty products that has washed up from the vessel, with concerns that debris could be washing up on New South Wales beaches for months. Volunteers have been clearing carloads of debris from Jimmys and Bennetts beaches at Hawks Nest since the morning of June 3. In the late afternoon of June 2, marine rescue authorities spotted four containers about one kilometre off Hawks Nest. Debris was also found inside Port Stephens at Rocky Point near Anna Bay and at Fingal Head, while a section of shipping container was also located at Yacaaba Headland. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said no charges were being considered against the ship's owners. However, AMSA and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will investigate once the ship had docked.
