Search operations off Girne have recovered six bodies, raising the death toll to 14 in the tragic shipwreck incident.
The Turkish Naval Command has reached the sixth body in the search and rescue operations for the missing passengers from the sunken ship off the coast of Girne. The number of fatalities resulting from the sinking of the ship has risen to 14.
In the search and rescue operations for the missing passengers on the ship that sank off the coast of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in Girne, the sixth body has been recovered. According to the information obtained, as a result of the search operations conducted under the command of the Commander of the Southern Sea Area of the Turkish Naval Forces, one more body has been found among the 15 individuals.
It has been reported that the body retrieved from the sea has been sent from the search area to Girne Port. Following the arrival of the search and rescue vessels TCG Işın and TCG Alemdar in the region, it has been learned that the sixth body recovered from the sunken ship will also be sent to Turkey after the necessary procedures.
With the latest information, the number of fatalities resulting from the sinking of the ship has been updated to 14, while the number of missing passengers remains at 14.
The sunken ship in Girne
The high-speed passenger ship named 'Filo Jet,' which operated between Girne Port in the TRNC and Taşucu Port in Mersin, began taking on water shortly after departing from Girne on Sunday, August 30, around noon, and sank while attempting to return to Girne Port.
TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel noted that there were a total of 267 passengers and crew on board the ship, stating that 239 individuals were rescued after the ship sank. The wreck of the sunken ship has been located at a depth of 554 meters off the coast of Girne, with 14 passengers confirmed dead and efforts continuing to find 14 others.
