MSC's TIL gains 50% stake in SOCAR Terminal, reshaping Turkey's logistics landscape after Competition Authority approval.
A major collaboration that will change the dynamics in the Turkish maritime and logistics sector has received approval from the Competition Authority after a meticulous six-month examination process. The Authority officially approved the transfer of a 50% stake in SOCAR Terminal (Aliağa), the largest container port in the Aegean Region, to Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), the port investment arm of the world's largest container operator, MSC.
Completion of Six-Month Review
The legal process that began after the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement in Baku on September 15, 2025, concluded with the Competition Authority's decision dated February 12, 2026, numbered 26-05/130-51. Following its review regarding whether a monopoly would form in port services in the region, the Authority ruled that the transaction did not constitute a violation of market competition and permitted the acquisition.
This partnership contains elements that will fundamentally change not only the capacity of SOCAR Terminal but also its role in global trade:
Global Integration: The terminal will be fully integrated into TIL’s extensive terminal network worldwide. As a result, Aliağa will become one of the main hubs in MSC's global routes.
Investment in Technology and Capacity: Under the agreement, SOCAR and MSC will jointly invest in the acquisition of next-generation equipment, digitization, and sustainability projects. The operational speed of the terminal, which can serve ultra-large container ships (ULCS) with its uninterrupted 700-meter quay and 16-meter depth, will be increased.
Fourth Major Partnership in Turkey: Following Asyaport, Marport, and Assanport, MSC has established its fourth major port partnership in Turkey with SOCAR Terminal. This move is expected to increase the group's share in the Turkish container handling market to over 20%.
Regional Competition and Market Dynamics
Industry representatives predict that competition will intensify in the market, which includes other strong players such as Nemport and TCE Ege in the Aliağa region. Following a decline in container traffic in the region to 1.7 million TEUs last year, MSC aims to redirect its own vessels to this terminal gradually, with the goal of bringing volumes back to record levels.
SOCAR President Rovshan Najaf described the partnership as 'a world-class strategic investment,' emphasizing that the port will not only serve as an operational point but will also strengthen Turkey's position in the global supply chain as a logistics hub.
