In 2025, Colombo Port achieved a record 8.29 million TEU, reinforcing its status as South Asia's premier container hub amid global shipping challenges.
The Port of Colombo achieved a remarkable throughput of 8.29 million TEU in 2025, marking its highest-ever performance, as reported by Xinhua.
This figure surpassed the 7.79 million TEU processed in 2024, further solidifying Colombo's position as South Asia's leading container hub despite the volatility in global shipping and trade flows.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) noted that all terminals contributed to this impressive performance, with SLPA-managed facilities handling a significant share of volumes to support both mainline and feeder operations.
Colombo International Container Terminals maintained its role as a deep-water facility catering to ultra-large vessels, bolstered by high berth productivity and yard efficiency. Meanwhile, South Asia Gateway Terminals provided consistent services for regional and transshipment cargo, and Colombo West International Terminal expanded its capacity.
The evolution of Colombo as a modern port dates back to the late 19th century when the construction of the first permanent breakwater transformed the harbor into a sheltered deep-water facility capable of year-round operations.
